A diverse group of teenage boys struggling to find their identities

I saw this movie in our school auditorium, as a high school classroom requirement back in the 1980's. I remember the girls crying, while a few of my male classmates sat quietly; perhaps being able to quickly identify themselves to one or more of the characters. The movie may not have interpreted the true spirit of the book, but I do think Stanley Kramer did as best a job he could in evoking both the struggles of male adolescence and the cultural patterns of the American family in the 1970's. There were many sobering messages despite the redundant metaphors throughout the film. Now, I am more interested in the "Where Are They Now" aspect of the film when I recently came across this title. I've found very little information on any of the main characters, with the exception of Bill Mummy. Also was saddened to hear about the death of Barry Robins (Cotton) back in 1986.

Unusual and disturbing giallo.

In the '40 Mariale is an eight year old girl.Powerless,she witnesses the death of her mother and of her young lover,both killed in cold blood by her father.Years have passed and Mariale has married a young nobleman who keeps her almost captive in an old estate forbidding her to take part in society's life.A sort of love-and-hate relationship has developed between the two characters.One day Mariale decides to put an end to her seclusion;she eludes her husband's and the butler watchful vigilance,breaks the phone's padlock and sends several telegrams inviting friends for a evening at her home.As absurd as it may seems,Mariale intends to reconstruct,thanks to her guests,the tragedy she lived several years before.She wants to prove that in everyone of us exist two distinct entities.When Paolo,Mariale's husband fully understands the situation is too late.The evening turns into bloody nightmare,when unknown killer starts murdering people.Romano Scavolini's "Spirits of Death" is a stylish giallo with some gory murders.The photography is beautiful and the atmosphere is creepy and nightmarish.The identity of the killer is never explained and that makes the film quite disturbing.The cast is splendid with Ivan Rassimov and Luigi Pistilli to boost.Check it out.7 out of 10.

Review :

Simple story, told well

This film, while not particularly inspired, does a very good job with the story of two boys who are trying to train a bird dog. There is a nasty neighbor and a few other plot developments that throw a hitch in their plans, but the film is quietly solid all the way. It might be a little too laid back for the kids of today, but in 1972 teenagers were more tolerant.

The cast is part of the reason the film works. Johnny Whitaker, looking not much older than his days on Family Affair, and George Spell were completely convincing as friends. The wonderful Beah Richards also helps the film along as George's mother. Earl Holliman and Pat Crowley are Johnny's parents, and Holliman always could be counted on to give a great performance. It's just a small film that shines quietly.

Robust entry in the violent euro-crime cannon

For some inexplicable reason 'Gang War in Naples' (aka) Camorra remains an obscure cinematic prospect; and while the gifted director Pasquale Squitieri has fortified this undeniably robust mafiosi actioner with many zesty set pieces, it is, sadly, one of myriad unseen Italian Euro Crime efforts of th 1970's; which is a great shame, since the nifty, two-fisted charms of 'Camorra' are undiluted.

Admittedly the ubiquitous 'thug rising up the ranks of the cosa nostra' theme is a little uninspired; but the hackneyed narrative is emboldened considerably by the welcome inclusion of that most magnetic and handsome of Italian leading men, Fabio Testi; who plays the scheming and violent hoodlum, Tonino Rosso with great elan; thus far, I have yet to see a lackluster performance from this swarthy-eyed devil! 'Gang War in Naples' (aka) Camorra is an unashamed crowd-pleaser; with its success as solid late night entertainment due in no small part to the luminous charisma of Testi, and Pasquale injects much rigor in what is ostensibly a tired premise. Good stuff! And mine's a J&B rocks!

Van Cleef is the standout in a good example of the genre

It could be said that The Grand Dual is merely a vehicle for its lead star, and whoever said it wouldn't necessarily be wrong; but while this film doesn't feature a lot of originality, it's also true that Italian cinema was based on repeating itself, and the film definitely succeeds in providing an enjoyable slice of western action. The script was penned by Giallo supremo Ernesto Gastaldi (The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh, The Case of the Bloody Iris), and that's not surprising as there are shades of Giallo throughout, and the film works both as both as a violent action flick and an intriguing mystery film. The plot focuses on Sheriff Clayton as he becomes involved in the murder of a man so-called 'The Patriarch' through his association with the sly Philipp Wermeer. The film follows the pair as they make their way through bandits and bounty hunters and eventually end up in Saxon town, where the sons of the Patriarch live. They've fingered Wermeer as the murderer of their father, and naturally want him hanged; but there's a twist to the identity of the murderer.

Lee Van Cleef made his name with Sergio Leone and the masterpiece westerns 'For a Few Dollars More' and, of course, 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'. This film is nowhere near the quality of those two, but Van Cleef does well in his 'man in black role', which is a variation on the common western 'loner' theme, which was made famous by the likes of Clint Eastwood and Django. Van Cleef's presence is felt throughout, and he continually makes every scene his own. As you might expect, the rest of the cast don't live up to the central star; but even so, The Grand Dual features a good ensemble cast, and Peter O'Brien does especially well in his central role. The film features a lot of shootouts and chases on horseback, which are always good to see; but at times, The Grand Dual puts too much focus on entertainment value and this can mean that the plot suffers. Even so, the story plays out well; and the final twist is a real standout, as even though it's pretty obvious throughout

• Gastaldi manages to throw in a twist just before it, which makes the

final twist come as a surprise. Overall, this film isn't one of the great Spaghetti westerns - but it's a good one and comes recommended.

No smoke without fire.

By the seventies,Annie Girardot had become André Cayatte's actress.She starred in all of his movies of the era but two ;the best was arguably "Mourir D'Aimer" .Girardot was also the most popular French actress of the seventies ,pejoratively nicknamed "the middle -class's idol.She was very likable and talented ,and now that she retired, she is missed.

The political movie was very trendy in the French seventies;many directors did their stint:Yves Boisset ("Le Juge Fayard Dit Le Shériff") Marcel Carné ("Les Assassins De L'Ordre" )Nadine Trintignant ("Defense De Savoir" )Pierre Granier-Deferre ("Adieu Poulet" ),even Claude Chabrol ("les Noces Rouges" had a strong political side),the list is endless....

The problem with Cayatte's movie is that,if it was intended as a political movie ,its ideology remains very vague (we may think that the good doctor and his wife represent the liberal left whereas the "others" are the diehards).Only the beginning and the short epilogue deal with politics.

But the screenplay is ,although implausible and terribly Manichaean,rather attractive and instead of a political movie,we have an entertaining thriller,with murders,photograph fixing, and discreet charm of the bourgeoisie .This action-packed story is never boring,and the actors (Girardot,Bernard Fresson,Mireille Darc,Michel Bouquet,Matthieu Carrière...) are all excellent.

Collection of old wife's tales

Nino Manfredi and Mariangela Melato are a couple who teach at the same elementary school and are dying to have a child of their own. At this school all the little students wear uniforms that make them look like miniature Austin Powers'. They also accompany the soundtrack with insipid songs that tell you what you are looking at. Whether you understand Italian or not, it soon gets on your nerves.

The couple decide to visit a Swiss sexuologist who uses a gay translator as a go-between. Paolo (Manfredi) does not seem to be having any problems down below, so it must be Maria (Melato)'s fault. He buys a special bed, she tries to commit suicide. Maria prefers old wife's tales over cold scientific facts, making her imagine a pregnancy that is not really there. It takes her a long time to tell Paolo the truth. Too long in fact (for him and for the viewer), since they are already throwing baby showers and decorating a room for little "Andrea".

I suppose actress Mariangela Melato was more popular with women than with men, as she got to play more female friendly parts than her contemporaries. Instead of having to spend the whole film being just a love interest or a object of lust, this large eyed, slender woman actually got to put forth a feminist standpoint (occasionally). There is also some typical early seventies social commentary on pollution, and Nino Manfredi shows he plays a nice guy really well. Still, neither the characters nor the viewer get a satisfactory feeling of closure. Like the similarly themed 'Maybe Baby' (2000), the movie simply ends.

Has its moments

I saw this dubbed Spanish film as The Hanging Woman, on Gorgon Video. The box promised scenes of brutality, rape, and humiliation beyond Last House on the Left. Just to clear the record, this is not true. There is no rape, and the closest thing to humiliation is when an innocent virgin bares her breasts. There is violence and graphic gore, but it really doesn't kick in until the climax. And what a climax! Bloody zombies rampaging in the best Night of the Living Dead fashion, with the luridness increased in typical European style. The final shot is chilling and almost Bergman-esque. However, the rest of the movie is pretty uneventful. Despite a strong beginning and creepy atmosphere--with the dirtiness of the period perfectly captured by grainy, washed-out color photography--most of the film is like an overlong episode of Dark Shadows. Sexy Dyanik Zurakowska has some powerful nude scenes, and her sex scene with Stelvio Rosi helps spice things up...but not much else happens. Paul Naschy, the reason many people seek this out, has a small role as a red-herring necrophile. On the whole, I think The Hanging Woman is worth seeing--but you should know what you're getting into. If you want your Naschy fix, see one of his werewolf movies.

Trivia: La Orgia de los muertos originally hit the States in 1974 as The Hanging Woman. International Artists promoted the film with a Last House-inspired campaign: "For the squeamish, keep repeating: It can't be true, can't be true, can't be true, can't be true, can't be true." Stelvio Rosi was billed as Stanley Cooper.

An infectious film with a lot more bedside

This is a more tastier sequel, that I actually prefer to the original. Even Eric, the brother collegiate of Lena who is now married to Max Michelson, has been dubbed with another voice. There's just much more funnier going ons in this one. Again Max, our slight klutz is bumbling into a few things like the underneath of that hot maid. There's another funny scene involving a young collegiate kid, being hoisted up a rope, outside the window of a big prep building, spying on a hot woman in a state of undress, getting his jollies. The building is temporarily operating as a hotel. Why? Well the boys need to raise a lot of moolah, to get a new annex built, where the school will then become a collegiate girls school, too. When first watching this film when I was about sixteen, the film reminded me of my younger college days at St Peters where I spent five terms there, way different from this film. let me tell ya. There's so much continual happenings in this tasty and well made movie, where too I find dubbed films funny. I didn't find this temporarily operating hotel, that luxurious, though, where the students go to so much effort, to ensure that new annex is built with many a reason. Some saucy nudity helps too. Way more enjoyable than the original.

Kinski And Morricone Save This Otherwise Unsatisfying Spaghetti Western

Alfonso Balcázar's "Il Ritorno Di Clint Il Solitario" aka. "The Return Of Clint The Stranger" is a Spaghetti Western that is mediocre at best, with a storyline that is normally found in American 'Good Guys vs. Bad Guys' Westerns. The movie is, however, saved by two geniuses: Klaus Kinski, who once again delivers a great performance in an excellent role (the only great role in this, otherwise below average film), and Ennio Morricone who delivers the score. The score is far from one of Morricone's strokes of genius, basically one of the scores where you know Morricone just did them for the money and didn't invest too much time, but it is still capable of partially saving the movie and making it a lot better. This movie's highlight, however, is the bounty hunter character played by the brilliant Kinski, who is basically the only typical Spaghetti Western character in this.

The main character of Clint, played by George Martin, is basically a typical 'good guy' who wants to return to family life after five years of fleeing the law. Five years after killing his brother's murderer, Clint comes back to his hometown, which he finds terrorized by a gang of unscrupulous criminals who want to steal the land from poor local farmers. Furthermore, a mysterious bounty hunter named Scott (Kinski) has been following Clint for the reward on his head.

This movie's storyline is not too original, and the performances are not too impressive either. George Martin may fit in his role, and his leading performance is not necessarily bad, but he is not very charismatic, and his character is far away from the antihero characters my fellow Spaghetti Western fans love. Klaus Kinski's character, on the other hand, is the only true Spaghetti Western character in this, and what a Spaghetti Western character he is. Seeing Kinski play a cynical, long-haired, cigar-smoking bounty hunter in a poncho is a true highlight of this movie, and probably the only aspect which really makes "The Return Of Clint The Stranger" worth watching. This particular role, however, is such a great aspect, that I recommend it for every fan of Spaghetti Westerns, even if just for this role and nothing else.

All in all, "Il Ritorno Di Clint Il Solitario" is a Spaghetti Western that would be rather unsatisfying, if it wasn't for Morricone's score and, mainly, for the great Klaus Kinski and the great role he plays. Therefore it is certainly worth watching. 5/10

Greed, death and vengeance when war goes private

It is the American Civil War as envisioned by Italians, set apart from the main theaters of conflict, out in the southwestern desert. James Coburn is Col. Pembroke who has lost impregnable Ft. Holman to the Rebs and who has a private scheme to retrieve it along with his honor. He sets out on a commando expedition with a sergeant and a dirty half-dozen volunteers, scalawags freed from the gallows and kept in line (barely) with a promise of hidden gold. Telly Savalas is the Southern commander dreading Pembroke's reappearance. Some exciting action and tense situations, but credibility is strained when, with the Ft. Holman Gatling gun spraying shot into the parade ground, the Confederate troops show no interest in cover but keep milling in the open like ants from a hill goaded with a stick. Not a great or inspiring movie but a solid performance from Coburn. And for all the death there's not much blood.

Post-Kitchen Sink Kitchen Sink

Filmed nine years after the last of the authentic kitchen sink films ('This Sporting Life' and 'Billy Liar'), 'The Ragman's Daughter' seems to me to be director Harold Becker's wistful homage to the original genre. The period kitchen sink films were shot in black & white, and here Becker shot in Technicolor, though the cinematography here is quite good, and yet in its frequent atmospheric moments supportive of my sense that this film is an homage by an American director who had earlier been smitten with the early crop of kitchen sink and "angry young man" pictures.

'The Ragman's Daughter' was the first feature film for all of its acting and crew principals, including Becker. Perhaps their having been collectively fond of and in awe of the original kitchen sink films lends this latter-day hearkening-back to the genre a haunting subtext or mystique that's quite appealing.

The screenwriter is Alan Sillitoe - from whose novels the period kitchen sink films 'Saturday Night And Sunday Morning' and 'The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner' were adapted - whose native Nottingham is the location for 'The Ragman's Daughter,' and the setting is captured in frame here with charm and warmth bordering on the fondly nostalgic which that Midlands industrial city perhaps never really afforded its working class inhabitants; there's little of the chill one catches from the early, period, black & white kitchen sinkers. Also, the conflict here isn't played out, as it is classically in the originals of the genre, among working class or even between working class and establishment characters; instead 'The Ragman's Daughter's' conflict is between the protagonist couple's working class male lead, Tony (Simon Rouse) and its second generation nouveau riche, but entrée-lacking, female lead, Doris (Victoria Tennant).

With captivating, absorbing inter-cutting Becker gave, in the form of the older male protagonist recalling the story of his lost youth, the film much of its haunting, "nature of regret" appeal. The pacing is quite slow, which suits the plot and characters and it contributes considerable gravitas to the storytelling's empathic profundity.

While not a opus major, 'The Ragman's Daughter' works its soft magic on several levels, not the least of which is nowadays its time capsule value - but I shan't spoil it for anyone by parsing the other levels here: see it for yourself and let this little gem's gleam catch and please your eye, mind, and heart.

Spanish Rake Fight

It is hard to deny Amando De Ossorio's talent behind the camera--the man knows how to make even the most foreboding locales postcard-pretty. His writing, on the other hand, is a different story..."Return of the Evil Dead" is essentially a plot less rehash of "Tombs of the Blind Dead," with a liberal helping of "Night of the Living Dead" thrown into the mix. I don't have a problem with movies borrowing from each other, but "Return" is so bereft of story and interesting characters that the whole thing becomes kind of tedious. While "Tombs" didn't really spring to life until its impressive climax, Ossorio does a much better job integrating the resurrected Templars into the film--mostly filmed in mid- and long-shots set against dark sets, they exude more menace this time out (also drawing attention away from their creaky marionette movements); problem is, the action scenes revolving around the Templars go on far too long, diluting their presence. And underneath the surface, there isn't much going on here--a bunch of forgettable, cliché characters hole up in an unusually well-lit church to hold out against the Templar menace--subplots involving a greedy Mayor, a jealous lover, and a lost child ensue. Ho hum. To "Return"'s credit, the opening Templar slaughter is effective, as is a suspenseful child retrieval scene, and the climax is chilling. Too bad everything in between is beautiful to look at but aesthetically mediocre.

Enjoyable with plenty of nudity....

Rather uneven and with a slowish start, although this does include a lesbian scene between the two lovely leads, Amuck does get going and although it's not exactly, full steam ahead, there are some fine moments. Barely qualifying as a giallo this nevertheless has enough sexy/nasty/weird scenes to get by very nicely. Venice manages to be made to look grey and spooky and the lagoon particularly creepy with a fine scene covering the disposal of a nude girl. Grainger just gets by but it's the girls that truly shine, oh and the monster that is the raping fisherman - has a way with eels too! Enjoyable, with plenty of nudity and some creepiness even if it doesn't work as well as it might have.

Terry, a social-climbing young woman accidentally gets caught up in the activities of two revolutionaries, Blossom and Django, and finds herself in a concentration camp for women. In the center of the camp is a towering wooden machine ("The Big Bird Cage") in which the women risk their lives processing sugar as the evil warden looks on. The prisoners are subjected to sadistic cruelty from the guards and fellow prisoners, and all attempts at escape are dealt with...permanently. Terry's only hope for escape lies in Blossom and her revolutionary allies.

Easily the best Pam Grier women in prison movie. Great fun!

Jack Hill's follow-up (but not a sequel) to his earlier 'The Big Doll House' is a much more confident and enjoyable movie. Hill wrote as well as directed this one and I think that makes a world of difference. The basic model of the earlier film is followed but Hill shrewdly saw that the handful of scenes between Pam Grier and Sid Haig in that movie showed plenty of potential, so this time round he casts them as singing Revolutionary lovers (yeah baby!), an inspired move that really makes this one something special. The foxy Anitra Ford ('Invasion Of The Bee Girls') plays a sassy character who crosses their paths early in the film during a robbery. Super cool Django (Haig) takes a fancy to her but before he can do anything about it she is arrested and sent to a brutal prison. (I should point out that even though this movie, like the others in this short-lived 1970s cycle, was filmed in the Philippines, it is set in some nameless Banana Republic). Before too long Grier also finds herself in the same compound, which is dominated by "the bird cage", a strange contraption the women are forced to work on as punishment. Django cooks up a nutty plan to save her by pretending to be gay to ingratiate himself with one of the camps (very camp) guards Rocco, played by Vic Diaz, who later reunited with Haig and Grier in 'Black Mama White Mama'. This is a fantastic piece of entertainment overall and a guaranteed hoot! Personally I would say it is only rivalled by 'Caged Heat' and 'Chained Heat' as far as women in prison exploitation movies go. Highly recommended fun.
