Giulia Follina with major star potential !

It was a "cult" movie when I watched this movie in the theater in germany in 1971. "Siggi" played by Giulia Folliana had some very funny and original lines. Still a teenager in the early 70's, I was a big fan of hers. She should have made way more movies like this one, and the producers and moviemakers should have discovered her great star potential. I'm sure that would have happened in hollywood. Unfortunately she had to work in germany, where her talents where wasted in corny, dull and superficial movies. I voted an "8" for this well crafted 70's period peace.

I love this movie

This is one of those great horror movies where the only problems can be found in corporate faults. This movie is full of great characters (even the character you're supposed to hate is really interesting), with good acting to back up the great story. I also like how Alan's necrophiliac desires are really underplayed by how the film is made. Some people won't even catch them the first time they watch it, which gives this an oddly intellectual angle. Also, most of the make-up FX are truly amazing in such a low-budget movie. The close-ups of some of these zombies really make that obvious, which makes me wonder how people could trash on these excellent make-up jobs. You want to see some bad make-up? See "Redneck Zombies", it will redefine what bad make-up is for you. Anyway, this movie is good at the black humor and just as good with the chills. This being a PG film without hardly any blood, I was surprised to find that the zombie attack scenes had an intensity to them that greatly rivaled those in "NOTLD" without hardly any gore. (Still, I do want to see the uncut version available through some import services and see why that version was rated for people 18 and over!) Another thing I love about this movie is that it has some of the greatest atmosphere to it. It retains a classic, dark-foggy-night horror feel throughout, with even the slowest of moments having a definite creepiness to them. It's also great to see a horror movie with zombies that relies more on the characters than blood and guts for a change. Many criticize this for being too slow, but I enjoyed every minute of it. A very sadly underrated and ultimately overlooked masterpiece of indie horror.

An enjoyably dreadful piece of sci-fi schlock

An evil lethal bright orange yellow fireball comes to earth and goes on a rampage in a remote lakeside area; the flaming thing rolls over various hapless folks and reduces them to ashes. It's up to nerdy scientist Dr. Iane Thorne (blandly played by Marvin Howard) to figure out a way to stop it before it's too late. Writer/director Harry Essex, who also wrote the scripts for the classic 50's fright features "It Came from Outer Space" and "The Creature from the Black Lagoon," pukes forth a 50's style micro-budget clunker that boasts all the necessary bad movie vices to qualify as a real four-star stinker: the flat acting from a lame no-name cast (flash-in-the-pan 70's drive-in flick starlet Maria De Aragon in particular just takes up space as fetching love interest heroine Jeanne), sluggish pacing, ragged editing, rough, grainy cinematography by Robert Caramico, meandering narrative, a roaring, overwrought score by Robert Freeman, several ludicrous touches (the fireball stalks people before it kills them!), and a hackneyed "it ain't over yet!" ending all combine together to create one laughably lousy and leaden lump of a total stiff. Only Doug Deswick's surprisingly nifty special effects manage to impress. A shamefully unsung crud anti-classic.

French and American artists unite to make a mystery

I found it quite bizarre that this bizarre movie made in 1971 is rated so low and some reviews are so bad. French director Chabrol unites with french actors Michel Piccoli and Marlene Jobert and Americans Orson Welles and Anthony Perkins (Perkins frequently worked with Welles). Loosely based on a mystery novel by Ellery Queen, this film is excellent and should be taught in film history classes. It combines elements from European and American cinema and the final outcome is World Cinema with superb acting by Orson Welles. Welles plays his favorite "Shakesperian" type of character, which he portrait in his films Othello, Macbeth, Citizen Kane, Mr. Arkadin and Immortal Story (which he made few years earlier). The film has good camera work, excellent props (statues that reminded me of the one's in Citizen Kane), costumes by Karl Lagerfeld and a strange electronic score at the beginning of the film supplemented with classical music as the film progresses. I won't spoil anything by going into plot details but to sum things up; this film kind of feels like "Citizen Kane part 2 made in France". Welles' character, Theo, lives in a mansion, his wife is having an affair, he's lonely, he's always buying expensive art and so on. Welles the filmmaker dominates this film, it's quite clear that director Chabrol learned a awful lot from him, the editing, the music, camera-work and the dramatic performances all remind me of his work. Highly recommended and it's a shame how hard it is to find a copy of this film, cause Orson Welles never acted in a good motion picture after Ten Days Wonder.

Strange, Strange & Strange

Wow - I have seen many Japanese sword films, many weird sexual exploitation movies but this one - where it combines so many genres (plus a film score that Issac Hayes would be proud of)this film is an oddity but also lots of fun. Hanzo is a tough cop who refuses to follow orders from his superiors. He is tough, he tortures HIMSELF to become even tougher. The actor is a bit pudgy with a double chin but his eyes

• he is the real deal. Intense, a real bad ass. Another way he toughens

himself up is to slam his own male member with a cane and then have sex with a huge burlap bag of rice (makes me think twice of ordering rice in a Japanese restaurant)- then when he needs to "interrogate" female suspects and/or witnesses - he uses his toughened flesh "sword" to get the women to comply. Strange, weird. The violence goes from clumsy to very real. My film group really liked it.

"Dream team" of Italian exploitation actresses

The "decamerotici" is not a genre most in the English-speaking world are too familiar with as they were rarely translated into English or released outside of Italy. These ribald period sex comedies were ostensibly based on Bocaccio's famous renaissance collection of often racy morality tales, "The Decameron", but were more directly based on the hit Pasolini movie of the same name (I suspect some of the hack filmmakers of these things had never even read Bocaccio). Many of these films have the word "Decameron" in the title and are even based on specific tales from the book, while others are merely set in the same, pre-Renaissance period and are the same bawdy spirit like "Ubalda, All Naked and Warm" (the only one so far to get a decent English-subtitled release) and this one. This film is told in vignettes like a lot of the more faithful "decamerotici", but like "Ubalda" the vignettes are based on the same group of characters in a single village and loosely tied together by a "vacca" (a cow) called "Fiorina".

These period movies are slightly more sophisticated than most Italian sex movies (that is slightly more sophisticated than a loud fart at the dinner table), but I would still maintain that the main (and perhaps only) reason to watch them is the women. You could generally divide the women in 1970's Italian exploitation movie into two broad characters, the "madonnas", voluptuous older women like Rosalba Neri or Mariangela Giordano, and the "lolitas", the not-much-less voluptuous but younger and more nublie actresses like Gloria Guida and Ornella Muti. Most of these films naturally utilized the former (or Edwige Fenech who was in a class by herself), but this one strangely has a lot of the latter. Swedish actress Ewa Aulin has the biggest role. She was most famous as the 17-year-old title character of the racy, big-budget comedy/satire "Candy", who a lot of big-time Hollywood actors and celebrities (Marlon Brando, Richard Burton, Ringo Starr) got a taste of (when they weren't mercilessly chewing all the scenery around her). Here she plays a lonely wife whose loutish husband disguises himself as a Spanish soldier to see if she'll cheat on him for money. Her nice, long nude scene almost keeps you from wondering what a blonde Swede is doing in medieval Italy.

The most famous stars though are Ornella Muti and Janet Agren, who have smaller parts. Muti still had a long international career in front of her at the time including a few Hollywood movies (one of which unfortunately is "Stop, or my Mom Will Shoot"). Agren had, well, something in front of her--she would be in Fulci's "City of the Living Dead" and some of the more inept Italian cannibal movies. The most interesting actresses for me though are Jenny Tamburi and Angela Covello. Tamburi was almost an under-study for Muti in her early career, taking over many roles that Muti for whatever reason didn't do. At the time though she was probably a better actress and more willing to shed her garments at least. Perhaps she wasn't the stunning beauty Muti was; she was really, really cute and sexy with a fresh face and great body that got here type-cast as a voluptuous and naughty teenager until she was pushing thirty. Angela Covello was the same way, but even more obscure. I'm not even sure how old she was--she managed to pass herself off as Anabella Incontrera's daughter in "So Sweet, So Dead" and a college girl in "Torso", but she usually played more older, adult roles like she does here.

This movie is currently available either as an out-of-print, Italian-language DVD or a much more rough-looking bootleg but with Spanish subtitles. If you don't speak Italian or Spanish though, I would hold out in hopes of some kind of English language release like with "Ubalda". It's definitely recommended though for the female cast alone.

Perfect Comedy with Great Soundtrack

This comedy/mystery is simply delightful. You can call it a masterpiece of its genre(s) or you can just enjoy its great timing, hilarious physical comedy, its story that involves spies, murders, and a sexy blonde (Mireille Darc) in a dress you have to see to believe. Pierre Richar is excellent as the blond man of the title who one day became a "person of great interest" for two rival departments in the French secret service. As we know, it is very difficult to find a black cat in a dark room especially if the cat is not in the room and that's what the experienced employees of the secret service try to do - to find the sense in the routine activities of a man they are convinced is an important spy and who is in reality an absent-minded and oblivious violinist and the object of the practical jokes by his fellow musicians.

If it is not enough, there is a soundtrack written by Vladimir Cosma and performed by the King of Pan Flute, a famous Romanian musician Gheorghe Zamfir. Cosma recalls that when he was composing the music for The Tall Blond Man, he was thinking of the movie "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold" and he wanted to use the elements of the Eastern European music. His idea to use the themes of Romanian doinas played by Zamfir was a stroke of genius. Once you hear the melodies, you won't be able to forget them.

German "report" film has very little story but plenty of beautiful women willing to get naked at the drop of a hat. There are several stories being told here but a few of the highlights include the first one with a new girl arriving in town and driving all the fathers and their sons wild. The second story deals with a boss who tries to get his way with his Secretary. The third story deals with a care giver who finds herself being seduced by a kid's father and mother. We then get to cult favorite Christina Lindberg playing a girl who doesn't have the money to rent a room so she finds herself having to work as an escort to make ends meet. After this we get two more stories but neither one are as interesting as the earlier stuff. Your level of interest in these German films will determine how much you enjoy this one. There's no question that there aren't any real brains behind these type of films as their main goal is to show women naked and this film certainly does that. I'm beginning to feel that Lindberg is the most beautiful women I've seen in any movie so the film is worth watching just for her segment that is pretty wild. At least the director was smart enough to realize how hot she was and have her naked for the majority of the running time. She gets some pretty weird scenes including being bossed around by a wannabe Nazi and another scene where an old pervert makes her ride him like a horse and "hop" for some money. The other women in the film are also extremely good looking even if they're lesser known among Euro fans. Ingrid Steeger is apparently the best known of the supporting cast and it's easy to see why. I don't think the film is on the same level as the handful of SCHOOLGIRL REPORT movies I've seen but fans of the perverted will still want to check this one out. As for the title, the Olympics were being held in Germany the year this was released and that's pretty much the only thing that the film has to do with the event.

A giallo for giallo fans

A man returns to Mila from an out-of-town trip to find his wife brutally murdered. Realizing he doesn't have a decent alibi, he doesn't call the cops, but immediately goes to see his lawyer. It turns out that, via the lawyer, he is connected to powerful corrupt men and is helping them traffic drugs. Since it isn't in anybody's interest that the man get arrested, the lawyer puts him up in an eerie, old and nearly abandoned hotel, although he is quite annoyed that his client insists on bringing his sexy young mistress (Patrizia Viotti)along with him. Immediately strange things begin to happen in the hotel: strange music is played at odd hours, the man stumbles upon the elderly owner of the hotel who has apparently just killed HIS wife and needs help burying her, and the owners' strange but attractive daughter keeps trying to seduce him. Perhaps the old hotel is haunted, or maybe someone is trying the beleaguered murder suspect crazy?

I'd recommend this giallo to giallo fans. Everybody else may be a little put off by the bizarre beginning and the rather ridiculous plot twists at the end. Hardcore giallo fans, however, will no doubt eat this kind of absurdity up and ask for seconds. This is not a great giallo by any means. The acting is generally pretty poor, but the sexy Patrizia Viotti will probably make an impression (on male viewers at least). Viotti played Barbara Bouchet's murdered lesbian lover in the giallo classic "Amuck", but she was understandably overshadowed in that one by Bouchet and Rosalba Neri. This is her show all the way though, and while she's certainly no Meryl Streep acting-wise, she does get nice and naked several times. The music by Mark Sigis Porter is also, uh, interesting. The title song is basically a bad Jimi Hendrix imitation, but, god knows, there are far worse people to badly imitate than Hendrix.

Casual viewers may want to pass on this, but giallo fans should definitely seek it out

This one broke all the rules

This ain't your grandfather's western. It's disturbing, cynical, morally ambiguous, and despite the stunningly bright visuals and bouncy themesong by Elmer Bernstein, it's one of the darkest westerns I've ever seen. I couldn't help but wonder if this film served as the template for the Eastwood masterpiece UNFORGIVEN that would come 20 years later.

Unlike your classic westerns where the hero is infallable and can shoot the dandruff off a cockroach at 100 yards, this presents a realistic protagonist: a man who is troubled by questions of morality, one who doesn't always have the perfect plan, one who makes some pretty bad judgements and has to pay the price.

There are some real gems of dialogue that illustrate this human factor, delivered brilliantly by Lee Van Cleef in the role of Chris.

A priest says: "God works in mysterious ways."

Chris retorts: "Yeah, he confuses the heck out of me, too."

And throughout the film we get similar insight into the soul of a man who, despite his decades of experience, still doesn't have any answers--at least none that he can convince himself about, despite his bravado. For that reason alone, I rate this as one of my favourite westerns. Like the aforementioned UNFORGIVEN, this is one of the rare westerns that shows us what real life is about, not comic book goodguy/badguy stuff.

I can only assume that's why this film doesn't seem to be well received. The earlier MAG7 films seemed to be a clearcut war between right & wrong, whereas MAG7 RIDE gives us a war between two different forms of insanity. This presents a much more challenging story to follow. Viewers might be confused at how a "good guy" can leave his friends to die, or how he doesn't fight fair. But to me--and maybe to you--it gives the story a lot more substance. It also makes the story very unpredictable right from the beginning, and as a result it's one of the most suspenseful westerns I've seen.

A word about Stefanie Powers: FREAKIN AMAZING. Good golly miss molly, I didn't know she could act! If you think all she can do is "Hart to Hart" you gotta check this film out for her performance alone. It's a tough role, because she plays the emotional character amidst a backdrop of cold, leathery gunslingers. This formula is nothing new for western heroines; however I've noticed in other films the emotional heroine is too melodramatic, reducing her to the absurd. Stefanie, on the other hand, delivers the perfect subtle performance: very human yet not hysterical. She's smart, wise (in many cases wiser than any other character)... and I gotta say it... what a looker! You'll find your eyes glued to her in every scene.

A final note, for anyone who notices this sort of thing: horses. As with all old westerns we see a fair number of horses getting thrown around. I went back & watched these scenes in slowmo, and I'm pretty sure that these were trained horses who fell without harm. Unlike RETURN OF THE MAG7 which was absolutely brutal (in one case you see a trip wire pop up, sending a 40mph, 2000lb horse onto its head--I doubt that horse ever got up again), these horses always fall to the side and roll safely. It always sucks when you learn how many horses are killed in these old westerns, but this film seemed to be pretty tame in that respect. Well, enough of that. The bottom line is I really enjoyed this film, and if any of this review made sense to you, I think you'll really like it, too. Go Ride(!) to your nearest video store and check it out. (gawd that was a cheezy line. Maybe I'll edit it out later)

Bound for DVD?

This is an extraordinary film, which I gave 10 out of 10 even if Warner Brothers, the film's theatrical distributor, cut the film in half for its American release. If ever this film (and its predecessor, "The Emigrants") makes it to DVD, I sincerely hope those 102 minutes are restored, so that I can at last see the film that Jan Troell intended for me to see.

As it looks on video, "The New Land" is still magnificent - its depiction of Swedish immigrants settling in frontier Minnesota outdoing every Western ever made. Be sure to look for the scene that George Lucas stole wholesale where Max von Sydow slaughters an ox and places his freezing son inside it during a snowstorm.

Mediocre portrayal about the rowdy rebel who attacked Columbus town

This is a semi-fictional chronicle of the notorious bandit Pancho Villa (Telly Savalas) . It's a witless recounting of Villa's American campaign with broaden focus about action and irony . Villa (Dorotea Arango,1878-1923) sends his gringo pal (Clint Walker) as gunrunner into US . But he encounters every obstacles with MacDermott (Luis Davila) , besides there meets his beautiful spouse (Anne Francis). Then Villa leads his merry men in the famous raid over an American fort after being double-crossed in a weapons deal . Crossing the frontier attacking firstly the checkpoint and bombing the cartel captioning ¨You are entering in United States¨ . Later on , it begins an intense charge over the Columbus headquarter . A cocky and megalomaniac colonel (Chuck Connors) attempts to battle against him .

This Spanish/American co-production paints an ironic , cynic portrayal of the famous leader following the exploits of Villa and his men formed by a peasant army into USA territory . The picture ignores the wealth of the authentic history and becomes yet another action/adventure/humor Western and this failed production doesn't deliver what it should . It's an average Western with comedy , tongue-in-cheek , action and plenty of shootouts, gun-play and some moments is quite entertaining . The motion picture is regularly directed by Eugenio Martin who made among others , terror film (Horror Express) and more Spaghetti Western (Bounty killer , Requiem for a Gringo and Bad man's river).

This uneven rehash about Pancho villa exploits is partially based on real events , the authentic deeds are the following : For a time Villa,who seemed in line for leadership of Mexico ,enjoyed the sympathetic interest of the US government who then dropped Villa and supported his rival,Carranza.Villa's resentment resulted in the vengeance raid on Columbus.Villa slapped the United States in the face by mounting a surprise raid on the town of Columbus,New Mexico,on 9 march 1916, killing eight American soldiers and ten civilians.In retaliation,President Woodrow Wilson sent General Pershing and a Punitive Expedition into Mexico in hot pursuit of Villa.General Pershing's column included the Seventh Cavalry and Apache scouts,chased Villa deep into Mexico,the Americans captured and killed several of Villa's lieutenants but failed to catch the guerrilla leader.Because of Mexican protests,Pershing's command returned to the US.Villa was assassinated in 1923 when gunman ambushed his car.

Blazing guns aplenty !!!!!!

I have just finished watching a Japanese video version of this film (titled Big guns) and found it very entertaining. I would recommend this Franco/Italian made movie to any lovers of the Italian crime genre,why, well for a start the great cast of Euro-stars, apart from Alain Delon there's Marc Porel (Murder to the tune of 7 black notes/live like a cop die like a man), Anton diffring, Richard Conte, Carla Gravina and Erika Blanc. Also the way the movie was executed, a familiar story (of a mafia hitman who wants to retire) but shot and paced excellently. Of course- things don't go to well for the 'want-out' hitman (Delon) and finds himself with a personal vendetta on his hands.

Great bloody shoot-outs, great car chases, sexy leading ladies (who also get ruffed-up) and a phat "Schiffrintastic" score sometimes reminiscent of 'Harry's creed'. The version I watched ran into 112 mins and was widescreen.

If you get the chance, check this one out.

Bad Longhairs

Bobby Joe moved away from town ten years ago, and got into acting in Hollywood. After one movie, he is famous, and is invited to speak to the high school students. When he arrives in town, the officials are floored to find that he is a long-haired hippy on a Harley motorcycle. The local minister does his best to make Bobby Joe go away.

Actually, Bobby Joes hair doesnt even cover his ears.

Bobby's family is afraid of what may happen to him, too.

An interesting little film. A fun look back at 1971.

Al Adamson's movies are often hit or miss, and this bore definitely misses

In the introduction to the Troma DVD, producer Sam Sherman refers to this as "a great movie with lots of interesting performances" and "its not a cult classic but it really should be". Even by the standards of exploitation cinema, hes completely overselling this tedious bore. I'm not really sure what to make of Al Adamson. I absolutely loved "Satan's Sadists" and it remains a trash classic, one of the most entertaining biker films out there. "Black Samurai" was fun and I've even come around to enjoying "Dracula Vs. Frankenstein" somewhat after disliking it on the first viewing. So a tough girls film along the lines of "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" coming from Adamson sounds like it would be fun, right? Unfortunately, despite a few moments of inspired insanity, this is pretty lousy.

The film disappointed me for several reasons. As usual with a lot of Adamson's schlock, the "storyline" is completely incoherent and obviously patched together from several different films. While this can be fun in a somewhat headache inducing way, its annoying here. This isn't a film, just a string of exploitable sequences. Also, for a film with the title "Angel's Wild Women", the women really aren't given anything to do. I knew I was in trouble when I expected a tough girls action flick and the first billed was Ross Hagen (in a performance which completely rips off The Man With No Name from Sergio Leone's "Dollars" trilogy). Most of all however, this film is just rather dull. Oh well, at least its not as bad as "Cinderella 2000". (2/10)
