Sad, so very, very sad

As Edie's biography here on IMDb says, she was in and out of institutions. It is clear that this woman-child was taken advantage of very callously by Andy Warhol and others, at first for her money, and later for her celebrity.

Ciao! Manhattan shocked and angered me when I first saw it in 1972, because I had known Edie. For several months in 1962, when she was in a very tony, low-security psychiatric institution in Westchester, I knew her as a sweet-natured, somewhat reticent, and very artistic 19-year-old. When I first met her I thought she was a 12-year-old child, as I was, for she was so thin and under-developed looking for her age. Seeing the way she is abused in Ciao! Manhattan just leaves me feeling very sad for her. She deserved better than this exploitation film.

As for the "Summer of Love" reference made by an earlier reviewer on IMDb, referring to the fact that this film was actually made partly in 1967, I do not think Ciao, Manhattan represents any of the genuine feelings of free expression and loving attitudes that were touted at the time. There is far too much cynicism inherent in this film to connect it in any way to the hippie happiness one could experience in pleasanter circles than that inhabited/created by the ghastly, selfish, mean-spirited, and self-involved Warhol. He used and threw away such gentle souls as Edie. I weep for the lost and under-appreciated life she led while under the influence of Warhol. In kinder company, she might have survived and been happier.

Ciao, Edie! You deserved better.

Sublimely, uniquely awful.

This story of a young college professor dabbling in modernized alchemy had possibilities, but the the hack filmmakers responsible for devising this travesty were inexplicably overcome by an urgency to compose this premise as the pith of a softy sex film. So much for worthy prospects...

It seems our beaker-tweaker leading man has merged ancient mysticism with modern-day science to create "The Alpha Stone", a source of awesome power capable of prolonging and revitalizing life...and libido. Said stone also turns a gay man straight(and compels him to screw a department-store mannequin that looks like Edie Sedgwick).

Naturally, beautiful women are powerless to the awesome entrancing might of the stone, diving bare-assed into bed with nary the slightest opposition.

Weird, weird, weird sci-fi/horror/sexploitation minimalism well worth a peek by trash mongers. Get yourself "Alpha Stoned" today! 5.5/10

Nice setting for an unusual giallo

Jason Porter (Alex Cord) is an alcoholic photographer working on an archaeological dig in an Etruscan tomb from the 5th century bc, he has a history of mental illness and violence which seen him locked up in a New York mental hospital, but now he's trying to get some normality back in his life, so when after a rainstorm at the dig he discovers the mutilated bodies of an amorous couple, the police naturally regard him as the main suspect. Some articles recently stolen from the site are found beside the bodies of the victims the only clue to who might be the killer. Porter has his suspicions as to who that might be, but the police interference is hampering his own investigation, added to that, Porter is also distracted by the fact that his former lover Myra Shelton (Samantha Eggar)is now married to a sadistic older man, Nikos, a sadistic old man and music conductor for a local theatre, where there are a number of suspicious characters.

Right from the start this plays like a horror film, we the viewer are led to believe that the killings are being done as an act of vengeance from a recently disturbed demon god with breathing difficulties, There is some great location work within the Etruscan tombs that adds to the atmosphere, the murals on the walls of the tombs showing the depictions of the actual murders before they happened, but Giallo experts will soon see that there are no supernatural forces behind these atrocities. The film also plays like a classic slasher in that sexual liaisons seem to herald the death of those involved, this is an unusual plot point for a giallo but then this is an unusual film. Riz ortolani provides a decent operatic score, the dubbing on the film is a real low point though, not the actual voices but the editing of them is beyond abysmal, this is still a film I believe would benefit immensely from an official release, considering the settings within the film a glossy new print would certainly bring this to a new audience

Hi This was a great movie when I saw it way back in 85. Although I had a bit of trouble understanding it the first time I saw it I kind of got to like the movie a lot after seeing it a couple of times and after getting a translation from my mother (she is Italian). If you guys want to see this movie try one which is dubbed into english or has english subtitles. Worth the Time you send on the movie I guess. Israeli cult classic

Metzitzim remains the best Israeli movie ever made, and that is saying a lot about it, considering the fact that it was made over 30 years ago and did not deal with the classic Israeli subject matters, meaning the political or the religious. In fact, the film's subject matter is as universal as it gets, dealing with loneliness and hanging on to youth, but at the same time this is undoubtedly the most Israeli movie ever filmed, due to the wonderful dialogues which were co written by Zohar and Einshtein. Many of the film's nuances are utterly untranslatable and will be unfortunately missed by non-Hebrew-speaking viewers. The movie is a must nonetheless, especially if you appreciate truth in film.

I can think of no other movie in any language which blends humor with deep sadness in such a subtle manner. "Metzitzim" is the ultimate sad clown. The funny sequences are masterful, such as the silent peeping tom scene, but it is the rare dramatic moments, summed up by mere glances, which make this movie shine. Notice the look on Gutte's face in two scenes near the end, when he looks back at Eli and Milli with a trace of disgust, or when he finds "little Altman" with his favorite prostitute. 10/10

Bad directing but wonderful playing and well prepared story.

The movie has a nice screenplay and a wonderful Mastroianni, but the directing is awful. The movie scenes are rhetoric and the photography too bad for 1971. It seems nobody took care about colors during the scenes. However the story will remain in your mind for a long time. The reflections of the old man are still impressive and you can understand the uncertainity of years '60 mentality. On the other side the crash of two worlds (the top model and the miner) is almost without winners, discovering the banality of everyones' life. The movie seems stupid at the beginning, but slowly you understand there is much more. The major insight arrives at the last scene, while the two players perform really good. It seems that the director also helped on the screenplay. Probably is good in creating the story but not on filming it. Mastroianni in this movie made me think about Alberto Sordi on "Bello onesto, emigrato in Australia". Actually only Sordi can replace Mastroianni in this play. Both stories are similar and the life of emigrants is described in the same way, that is half empty. The tendency of emigrants to loose their personality in a foreign environment can still be a good story today in the global era.

D'Amato's confusing, but extremely stylish, horror masterpiece.

Death Smiled at Murder…and horror admirers all over the world salute Joe D'Amato for delivering this film, by which he proves that he's not just an insane and untalented adult-filmmaker. Okay, D'Amato made a lot of meaningless, cheap quickies throughout his entire fertile career but he does know how to tell a creepy and unsettling horror tale. Just look at 'Beyond the Darkness'…or this 'Death smiled at Murder', which is an even better example. The plot doesn't always make sense, but it's beautiful to look at and it's very stylishly elaborated. The settings and photography are mesmerizing and the delightful musical score is almost hypnotic. But of course, this wouldn't be a D'Amato film if it didn't also feature a rather large dose of sleaze and violence. Kinky Joe shamelessly stuffed his film like a Thanksgiving turkey with slightly perverted elements (incestuous lust, an obscene love-triangle…) and nauseating gore (decomposed corpses, a face entirely shattered by shotgun…)

Summarizing the plot of 'Death Smiled at Murder' isn't a very easy thing to do as it handles about multiple macabre topics. A sinister doctor is on the verge of translating an ancient formula carrying the secret of how to raise the dead. A beautiful young girl and her deranged brother seem to be involved in this process as well but they first annihilate the entire population of a countryside mansion. The owners of this mansion, a rich couple, are both romantically involved with the gorgeous girl named Greta. The acting is fairly good as well, with Klaus Kinski on top. His role in the film isn't very essential, but his up-to-no-good grimaces provide the story with an extra bit of eeriness. With this film, D'Amato proved being capable of delivering films that are on the same quality-level as some of the Jess Franco films and maybe some of the weakest Mario Bava films. Recommended to every fan of top-Eurosleaze

Some things you just never forget .........

Damaged Vietnam War buddies Michael Moriarty and William Devane, hook up with sadistic sergeant, Mitchell Ryan, and proceed to Moriarty's fathers farm. The movie displays a lot of baggage that each soldier is bearing, and Arthur Kennedy has issues with his son, so this is not what I would call a pleasant viewing experience. "My Old Man's Place" is fascinating however as the soldiers interact, change opinions of each other, and eventually collide. This character driven drama is well acted, with scalding dialog. Basically it is the story of a son not living up to his father's expectations, and a war not living up to the soldiers expectations. Recommended. - MERK

Rodents Galore!

A mousy, introverted young man befriends and teaches rats basic commands. Soon his home and life are preoccupied with this rodent infestation, coming particularly close to two rats, Ben and Socrates. Willard is played with great skill by Bruce Davison, communicating to the audience his despondency with family life as well as with his job. He has a love-hate relationship with his dotty, doting mother, played with the usual charm only Elsa Lanchester can exude. His relationship with his mother's friends is distant, and with his employer Martin, disastrous. Martin is played with relish by Ernest Borgnine, making the audience feel little sympathy for his fate. Naturally, Willard trains the rats to do "bad" things and this leads to a battle of wills between Willard and the main rat Ben(the lead character in the film's sequel BEN). Overall, the film is rather slowly paced, but well-acted and rewarding in the end.

A typical french crime movie from the seventies

The tale of friendship among thieves, bank robbers who are also stunt men in the same time. For cover. One of them - Bouise - has a daughter of around twenty years old - Berto - who is in love with a young thug - Bouchitey. This petty thief wants of course be in the run with the older gangsters.

They plan and operate on a bank heist. They first take the bank director's family for hostage, and go to the safe deposit boxes armored room in order to crack one the safes. Full of money.

So, everything begins to fall out for them all...

A pretty good thriller, poignant, heart gripping, with good action sequences. A violent picture. We also find the topic of rebel youth, through the love between Berto and Bouchitey. The friendship between Bouise and Reggiani is also intense.

The ending is devastating, depressing at the possible.

To losers its a way of life - Bummer!

The multi talented Dave Friedman produced this "groupie" based trash classic.

It has the look of "The Blast off Girls" but it altogether nastier and more brutal, with a line in the trailer "You dont have to Rape a Groupie, You just have to Ask" (this was turned to Assault for ad's) you can get the picture of what your going to get.

I'm not going to get into detail, but if you love Friedman then get this movie and if your just dipping your toes it the water this is a good place to start

one of my favorite films (no foolin')

"Victormin" may think he's the only person who ever saw this film. But I saw it as well. I saw it on television about twenty or thirty years after HE saw it. What "Victormin" says about the film is correct. It is a concise, tightly presented feature. But I wouldn't label it as a product that came "out of Hollywood." It is definitely a West Coast product, yet it was produced far from the Hollywood mainstream. In fact I'd say that it's a production that emerged from the seedy underbelly of the film industry. (Despite its Christian theme, and despite the fact that Don Murray and David Nelson are such fine, upstanding exemplars of middle-class rectitude.) What I like about the project is that it has two directors to handle the two elements or "sides" of the story. Sex-obsessed skank (and I say it in a kind way) John Derek is there to show us the tough, gritty background of the Tom Harris character, and squeaky-clean David (son of Ozzie) Nelson is there to detail Harris's redemption. John Derek does double duty, working as cinematographer, and his washed-out "California sunshine" photography is effective. "Confessions of Tom Harris" is a "religious" picture, sure. But above and beyond that, it's a tough, kickin' indie flick with BALLS.

The Artificial Creation

Most people watch Franco it seems specifically because it is junk, or so they think. The cheapness and (for the era) exotic nudity must give some sort of trailer park thrill.

But these films seem important to me. The reason is that today's most exiting cinema comes from the Spanish tradition of layered realisms. While the main source is Latin literature, I fancy that it can be traced back to Franco and buddies as well.

About half of these that I encounter make me yell "This! This must be the ultimate Franco!" I had that experience when gliding through this.

Yes, of course it is cheap, with bad acting and so on. But nearly _every_ movie is for me. Its just a matter of degree and earnestness. Overlook that, dear viewer.

The story alone should be enough to attract you. I won't recount it here, but it is complex and ambiguous, borrowing from several genres and reinventing them capriciously. One character is the evil genius's erotic soothsayer. She is blind but sees, a vampire but humanly erotic, our surrogate on screen.

That evil genius wraps us up in capturing Frankenstein's monster to mate for a purpose I didn't understand. This eventually involves Frankenstein's beautiful scientist daughter who temporarily reanimates her now carrion dad and ends up getting nudely whipped... well it hardly matters.

The real thing is in how he creates a gauzy, abstract world that floats above the normal world of movies. It is a movie like other movies, but not. It engages us in a conspiracy to weave a new world. Who cares about what that world contains, it is how it is woven that matters.

Ted's Evaluation -- 3 of 3: Worth watching.
